Vesper Sparrow

These are some older photos, taken back in late July of 2011. At the time, I thought I was observing some adolescent Sparrow something or others. Since the photos were kind of blurry I largely ignored them and moved on. Upon review though, I think I'm looking at some Vesper Sparrows, which I've never recorded before! This is better than finding 5 dollars in the back pocket of those pants you haven't worn for 2 years...

    1. Woohoo! I won't think too hard on what this says about my birding skills at the time though...

  2. Congratulations on such an easy tick! We've gone back through some of our older photos from when we were just starting out birding and were doing some international traveling. Some of the identifications we made were impressively bad and we've had to adjust our lists accordingly. Usually it only changed one new species into another, though, not gaining a new tick retroactively. Nice find!

    1. I know what you mean Nicholas (about some of my own heinous misidentifications). There should be a new term for this sort of thing though...maybe "couch birding?"

Couch birding isn't quite as fun as the real thing, but hey sprinkle a little on the side and you still find some new species I guess!

    1. Indeed! Nothing like a little review, even if it makes you cringe most of the time, like reading old essays or letters and wondering, "What was I thinking!?"
It worked out a little better here though, at least in terms of finding something cool.
